This Zwertbier, or Black Ale, pours a deep, opaque black with a modest tan head. Brewed with a European lager yeast, it offers a clean fermentation profile that highlights the complex malt bill of Aromatic and Caramel malts. Subtle notes of dark chocolate and roasted grain dominate the palate, balanced by a hint of earthy bitterness from Nugget hops. The addition of licorice root provides a faint, spicy complexity on the finish, complementing the beer's moderate body and dry character. At 5.4% ABV, it remains highly drinkable.
