Living in Central Oregon, we're a 20-minute drive from Bend — a town that consistently ranks among the top US cities for brewery density per capita. The result is that our personal IPA shortlist leans Pacific Northwest, with a few outliers worth the trip.

The Bend list starts with the names you'll see on any local taproom shelf. Boneyard Beer Co built its reputation on aggressive hop-forward IPAs and its flagship lineup is where most Bend IPA conversations begin. Crux Fermentation Project, founded by a former Deschutes brewmaster, is where to go for experimental hop bills — they're as likely to have a 4% session as a 9% triple, and both will be technically clean. Bend Brewing Co, one of the oldest production breweries in town, is the place to taste a Northwest-style IPA done in the classic template.

The 10 Barrel locations across Bend, Portland, Denver, and San Diego each run pilot programs, so the IPA lineup varies by city. Visiting more than one is the cheap way to see which direction a national brand is pushing the style. The Bend Pub is the most experimental of the four.

Beyond the Pacific Northwest, the verified record of who's brewing the best IPAs in America comes from competition results — and our list now includes the top award-winners from across the country. North Park Beer Co. in San Diego has six medals across IPA categories (one gold, three silvers, two bronzes), arguably the most consistently recognized IPA producer here. Alvarado Street Brewery in Salinas, CA holds four IPA medals. Fort George Brewery in Astoria, OR is a Pacific Northwest standout with two golds. Out of California: El Segundo Brewing Co, Ambitious Ales (Long Beach), Movement Brewing Company (Rancho Cordova). Across the country: BKS Artisan Ales in Kansas City and Old Irving Brewing Co. in Chicago each have two gold IPAs. Devil's Club Brewing in Juneau, Alaska has emerged with three medals — a meaningful achievement given the state's small craft-beer footprint.

What to actually look for at any IPA-focused brewery: a canned-on or packaged-on date that's recent (hop aroma fades fast — within 6–8 weeks of packaging is when you'll get what the brewer intended). Hazy or West Coast doesn't matter much to us. What matters is the brewery's commitment to hop freshness and consistency.
