What 218,146 Upcoming Events Say About the American Taproom

A September 2026 benchmark of 218,146 upcoming events at 7,841 American breweries: what taprooms program, which nights they pick, and where the gaps are.

By Christina Stein

Beer.Social compiles the public event calendars of American breweries into one place. This is what is on them right now: what breweries put on, which nights they choose, and where the quiet gaps are. The whole picture, including the parts that are unflattering to our own data.

Everything below covers events starting in the next 60 days, counted on 21 September 2026. No survey, no panel: these are the listings breweries published themselves.

  • 218,146 upcoming events
  • 7,841 breweries with something on, out of the 11,048 active breweries in our directory
  • 96% of listings are recurring, not one-offs
  • Across 50 states plus DC and the territories

A further 18,358 listings were opening hours rather than events. Those are left out of every figure here.

Taprooms run on rhythm

Ninety-six percent of everything on these calendars repeats. A taproom calendar is not a series of occasions, it is a weekly pattern with a few festivals laid on top. That single fact shapes everything else here, and it is the reason a brewery with no recurring night is invisible for most of the month.

What breweries actually program

Two categories dominate, and they dominate differently. Trivia is the widest: 3,941 breweries run it, more than any other single idea in American beer. Live music is the deepest: fewer breweries, but more nights each, so it produces the most listings overall. If you want company, run trivia. If you want volume, book bands.

A brewery appears in every category it programs, so the brewery column sums to more than 7,841. "Everything else" is a third of all listings, which is proof that the interesting half of this business does not fit anyone's taxonomy.

Thursday is the busiest night in American beer

Not Friday. Not Saturday. The weekday middle carries the calendar, and the weekend is comparatively quiet, because weekends fill themselves and Tuesday does not.

Where the calendars are fullest

Volume follows brewery count, with two exceptions worth noticing: North Carolina and Colorado punch far above their size.

Highlighted states run more than the national average of 27.8 events per publishing brewery.

Michigan 7,238 292 24.8

Size is not the whole story. Ranked by events per brewery instead of by total, those same states rearrange. South Carolina leads at 36.0 events per taproom over 60 days; Oregon, which has twice as many breweries, comes last of the twenty at 22.3. The national leaders are smaller states still, outside the top twenty by volume entirely: Hawaii at 43.6 events per brewery and Delaware at 42.4.

What I would do with a taproom calendar

Every brewery's situation is different, but the shape of this data suggests the same five moves almost everywhere. None of them costs much beyond deciding.

Pick one anchor night and name it. Not "live music sometimes". A named night, same weekday, published as a recurring series. Ninety-six percent of the calendar is recurring because repetition is what people remember and what search engines index. One anchor beats six scattered specials.

Choose the night before you choose the format. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday carry 101,227 of the next 60 days' listings. Monday is the emptiest night in American beer. If you are adding something, add it midweek, where the audience is already in the habit of going out, rather than on a Saturday that fills itself.

Look at what your neighbours are not doing. Trivia sits at 3,941 breweries and live music at 3,072, so both are proven and both are crowded. The openings are in the middle of the table: run clubs at 756 breweries, game nights at 685, comedy at 260, dance nights at 204. Being the only taproom in town with a format is worth more than being the fourth with a quiz.

Do not mistake happy hour for programming. Happy hours are 18,162 listings from 1,110 breweries, which is a small group publishing the same line every day. It fills a calendar without giving anyone a reason to choose you, and it rarely wins the search of somebody deciding where to go tonight. Keep it, but do not let it be the whole calendar.

Publish the season weeks early. 591 breweries have an Oktoberfest on right now and 311 already have Halloween listed. Seasonal searches start well before the season does, and the calendars that are up early are the ones that get found. The same is true of anniversaries, which almost nobody publishes in advance.

Then make sure it is readable. 3,207 of the breweries in our directory have nothing upcoming published anywhere a search engine can see. Many of them are busy places with full calendars that live on a chalkboard, an Instagram story or a PDF. If a visitor from out of town cannot find your Thursday, it may as well not be happening.

How this was made, and where it is weak

Source. Breweries' own public event listings, compiled daily and matched to 11,048 active US breweries. Nothing here comes from a survey or a partner feed.

Window. Events starting between 21 September and 20 November 2026, counted on 21 September.

Classification is ours, and it is imperfect. A third of listings land in "everything else". Some of that is genuinely unique programming, and some is our taxonomy not keeping up.

Recurring series inflate counts. A weekly trivia night appears as roughly nine listings over 60 days. That is deliberate, because it reflects what a visitor sees, but it means listing counts measure frequency, not distinct ideas.

We exclude opening hours. 18,358 listings were taproom opening hours rather than events. They are not events and they are not counted here.

Coverage is not complete. A calendar that lives only on Instagram or a chalkboard is not in here, and it is not in anyone's search results either.

Every brewery's events are listed on Beer.Social free. If you run a taproom and want to control how yours appears, claim your brewery page and post your own calendar. If something here looks wrong about your brewery, tell us and we will fix the record.
