Oregon Brewers Festival

Portland, Oregon

The Oregon Brewers Festival is one of the longest-running craft beer festivals in the United States, held each summer at Tom McCall Waterfront Park on the banks of the Willamette River in downtown Portland, Oregon. Since its founding in 1988 the festival has showcased independent brewers from across Oregon and the wider Pacific Northwest, pouring a rotating lineup of IPAs, lagers, fruit beers, sours, and experimental one-offs to tens of thousands of attendees over multiple days.

The format is a Portland institution: attendees pick up a festival mug and tasting tokens, then work through a pour list that runs from flagship favorites to festival-only debuts that many breweries save specifically for the event. Because the festival predates the modern craft boom by decades, its history tracks the history of Oregon beer itself - breweries that poured their first festival taster in the early years went on to define the state's brewing identity.

Beyond the beer, the festival is a fixture of Portland summer culture. Live music, food vendors, and brewers on hand to talk about what they poured make it as much a celebration of the local brewing community as a tasting event. The waterfront setting puts the whole thing on the river with the downtown skyline behind it, an easy walk or MAX ride from anywhere in the central city.

The festival has traditionally landed in late July, when Portland summer is at its most reliable. If you are planning a trip around it, the surrounding blocks of downtown and the Pearl District hold one of the densest collections of breweries in America, so the festival works well as the anchor of a longer Portland beer itinerary.
