Gherkinfest

Knoxville, Tennessee

Gherkinfest is Knoxville, Tennessee's festival of all things pickled, hosted at Schulz Brau Brewing Company - a German-style brewery and biergarten on the north side of downtown. For one weekend each summer the castle-styled brewery fills with pickle-themed food and drink, craft vendors, live music, and special appearances from the festival's beloved Pickle Princesses. It is exactly as delightfully odd as it sounds.

The pairing works better than you might expect: Schulz Brau's German lagers and sours sit naturally next to briny snacks, pickle-brine cocktails, and the fried, fermented, and dilled creations that vendors bring out for the occasion. The festival has become one of Knoxville's quirkiest annual traditions, drawing pickle devotees from well beyond east Tennessee.

Outside festival weekend, Schulz Brau's biergarten is one of Knoxville's distinctive beer destinations, pouring traditional German styles brewed on site.
