Every spring and fall, migratory birds travel the Pacific Flyway, a major North-South migratory route that stretches between Alaska and Patagonia. Lake Merritt, established in 1870 as the nation’s first government-owned wildlife refuge, serves as an important rest stop for these waterfowl during their migrations.
